The Special Education Nurse Consultant is a Registered Nurse with a baccalaureate or Master's degree in nursing who has professional experience working with children in both the hospital and school setting. The consultant is available to both AEA and local school district staff.

Services Provided

  • Consultation to area school nurses in writing individualized student health plans and emergency plans for students with life-threatening conditions
  • Training for practitioners and school nurses on various chronic disease processes as well as the performance of technical skills and procedures
  • Nursing continuing education workshops for new school nurses, vision screening, LEA Medicaid, and other topics related to provision of special health services.
  • Problem focused on-site consultation to assist with mainstreaming children through Section 504 or Special Education
  • Phone consultation to assist with the provision of special health services through Section 504 or Special Education
  • Consultant to the multidisciplinary AEA/LEA problem-solving team for students whose health needs interfere with learning

Call the Special Education Nurse Consultant assigned to your district. The position is staffed Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. during the school year. Voice mail is available.

Cost

The service is provided at no cost to the user. The position is funded through special education monies.

Area Served

All children from birth through graduation identified in need of special health serivces who reside within Heartland Area Education Agency 11 are eligible. These services are based out of the Ames or Johnston, Iowa office but are available on site as needed.

Health Resources

Assorted video tapes and reference books are available through the professional library. The special education nurse consultant maintains basic references on a variety of medical conditions. Training materials are kept on common procedures and treatments. Numerous school health related model forms have also been developed and are available through the Heartland forms and handouts button on the home page of this site.

Referral Sources

Students may be referred for Special Education Nurse Consultive services by Area Education Agency practitioners, school nurses, teachers, or administrators.

Examples of Consultative Services

• Children with medical conditions requiring treatments and/or procedures during the school day.

Assistance available to write the individualized student health plan and to coordinate the school treatment plan with the home and community plan.

• School districts without school nurses.

Problem focused assistance for administrators in securing required student health related services in the school setting.

• Infants and toddlers with multiple medical concerns served by the home intervention program.

Assist teams to secure a nursing resource person to assist with initial and annual health reviews. Serve as a consultant for teams without another available resource.
