Assistive Technology Specialists work in conjunction with local educational teams. To access Assistive Technology Services:
First- Educational teams consider and implement interventions that include assistive technology strategies and equipment to enable students to:
- Actively participate in the general education curriculum
- Access and use information for academic and vocational success
- Communicate ideas effectively in written and oral form
- Increase productivity in school and work settings
Next- Educational teams access Assistive Technology Services when it has been determined that the student's needs exceed local resources, such as:
- Professional expertise
- Hardware, software and devices
- Technology-based strategies to improve communication, computer access, reading or writing
Then- Assistive Technology Specialists provide expertise
- Technical resources
- Assessments that match student needs with technology options
- Capacity-building through staff training on equipment or strategies
- Short-term evaluative equipment loans
