6+1 TRAIT Data Management
Heartland AEA created this spreadsheet to help teachers track student understanding. Teachers will be able to:
-
Enter student data by name and/or by student ID number.
-
Enter student writing scores by trait.
-
Enter the date the trait was scored.
-
Determine a student's point total per trait.
-
Determine a student's adjusted trait percentage by trait.
-
Determine a student's average adjusted trait percentage across traits to assign a writing grade for the term.
-
Determine class averages for each assignment within a trait and class averages for trait totals, adjusted trait percentages by trait, and overall adjusted trait percentages.
-
Graph individual and/or group data.
To use the spreadsheet:
-
Click on the cell in which you want to enter data.
-
Use the arrow keys, the mouse, or the TAB key to move to another cell.
-
The sheet is formatted to automatically calculate total student scores per trait, the student's adjusted trait percentage (ATP) for individual traits and across traits, class averages for individual trait entries, trait total scores, individual trait ATP, and the ATP for all traits (giving an average percentage for assigning a writing grade).
To graph data:
-
Use the mouse to select the cells to be graphed. If the cells are adjacent, click on the first one and hold the mouse button while dragging across the cells. If the cells to be graphed are not adjacent, click on the first cell and release the mouse button. If working on a MAC, hold down the apple key and click on each of the remaining cells to be graphed. In the Windows platform, hold the Control key and click on the remaining cells to be graphed.
-
On the menu bar click the Chart Wizard icon (looks like a 3-D bar graph).
-
Select the graph type. Click NEXT.
-
Click on Rows. Click NEXT.
-
Click on Titles tab. Enter chart title. Enter axis titles (X is the horizontal axis; Y is vertical).
-
Click on Data Table tab. Click Show Data Table to add this to the bottom of the chart. Click NEXT.
-
Chart location - To place the graph on its own page, click As New Sheet. Name the sheet by entering the title in the highlighted line that says "Chart 1." Click FINISH.
-
If the vertical axis value is incorrect, right click on that axis line. Select Format Axis. Choose Scale tab and reset maximum value. Click OK.
-
The graph is ready to print.
