Living in Central Iowa

Heartland AEA serves students, families and communities across central Iowa. Our main office is located in Johnston, a suburb of Des Moines, the capital city of Iowa. Heartland also provides services from regional offices located in the central Iowa towns of Adel, Ames, Carroll, Guthie Center, Indianola, Knoxville and Newton.

Whether you live in the Des Moines metro area or in an outlying community, there are numerous housing options available for you and your family. You can live in a downtown loft or on an acreage in the peace and quiet--it's all up to you. And when it's time for some entertainment, the entire region is full of things to see and do!

In Des Moines, pay a visit to the Science Center of Iowa, spend a day at the Blank Park Zoo or take in a play at the Civic Center of Greater Des Moines.

When you're in Ames, you can visit Reiman Gardens to see the 11 gardens and indoor butterfly wing and then catch an array of Division I sporting events at Iowa State University.

If you travel further west to Boone, your trip isn't complete without going to the Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad, which is an operating railroad museum providing excursion and dinner train rides across the Des Moines River Valley.

When you're near Indianola, make it a point to head to Summerset Winery to listen to some great jazz music, and in the summer be sure to see the hot air balloons at the National Balloon Classic.

If you're a racing fan, you'll love the Iowa Speedway in Newton and the Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, home of the Sprint Car National Championships.
