JOHNSTON, Iowa -- Ames High School captured the two top places at the Heartland Area Education Agency Knowledge Bowl, Nov. 13 in Des Moines. The Ames A team defeated the runner-up Ames C team and the third-place Des Moines Central Academy A team in the championship round.

The victory marked the fifth year in a row that an Ames team has won Heartland AEA’s Knowledge Bowl. Students in the annual event answer questions from a number of academic subjects including history, English, mathematics, science and geography.

Members of the winning Ames A team were Andrew Fowler, Stephen Gerbracht, Aviv Luban, Neil Lutz and Neal Marasinghe. The second-place Ames C team included Alissa Anderson, Chuck Cleary, Deepa Kunapuli, Michael Liu and John Obrycki. The Ames teams were coached by Kirk Daddow. The third-place Central Academy A team included Alex Hubball, Olive Borzo, Jordan Jones and Max Villwock.

Gilbert’s A team was fourth and included team members Garth Strohbehn, Jacob Haynes, Xiang Gu, Max Gulden and Patrick Gannon. Ames’ B team and West Des Moines Valley’s A team tied for fifth place.
