JOHNSTON, Iowa–Twenty-four teams of area high school students have qualified for the final round of the Knowledge Bowl 2003, sponsored by Heartland Area Education Agency. The finals will take place at St. Mary of Nazareth Parish Center, 4605 NW 47th Ct., in Des Moines, Thursday, Nov. 13.

The Ames High School "A" team had the highest score in the preliminary round with 1,204 points followed by West Des Moines Valley "A" with 1,014 points and Des Moines Central Academy "A" third with 1,005.

The 24 finalists emerged from 107 teams from 42 Iowa high schools that began the competition in a preliminary computer round in October. Using a special computer program, teams answered questions of general knowledge, with points awarded for accuracy and speed. Competition at the final round on Nov. 13 will include written questions followed by oral rounds. The three teams with the highest final round scores will advance to the championship round later that day.

Heartland AEA is one of Iowa's 12 area education agencies. Heartland provides services and programs to 55 school districts, 32 approved private schools and preschool youth with special needs in 11 central Iowa counties.
