JOHNSTON, Iowa — Ames Middle School won the 2003 Heartland Area Education Agency Junior High Knowledge Bowl, March 6 in Des Moines.

Ames Middle School’s Team A, coached by Jayne Staniforth, won the championship round and the overall title. Adel-DeSoto-Minburn Middle School team A was second in the championship round and West Des Moines Stillwell Junior High team A was third.

Only the top three teams of the 24 that competed March 6 advanced to the championship round. Students were asked questions from a number of academic subjects including history, English, mathematics, science and geography. The championship round included a written test and head-to-head oral rounds.

Members of the winning Ames team are Ben Leung, Ulfur Grant, Wyatt Miller, Jason Johnson and Wern Ong. Those on the runner-up Adel-DeSoto-Minburn team are Josh Brennan, Laura Vaske, Katie Harrington, Beau Pickering and Jeremy Ervin.

Gilbert Junior High teams finished fourth and fifth. Gilbert’s C team was fourth and the A team was fifth. The 24 teams that competed came from 16 schools. On Feb. 12, 118 teams from 47 Iowa junior high and middle schools began the Knowledge Bowl in a preliminary computer round.
