JOHNSTON, Iowa – Ames Middle School won the 2004 Heartland Area Education Agency Junior High Knowledge Bowl, March 11 in Des Moines.
Ames
Middle School’s Team A, coached by Cappie Dobyns, won the championship
round and the overall title. West Des Moines Stilwell Junior High team C was second
in the championship round and the Gilbert Junior High team B was third.
Only
the top three teams of the 24 that competed March 11 advanced to the
championship round. Students were asked questions from a number of academic
subjects including history, English, mathematics, science and geography. The
championship round included a written test and head-to-head oral rounds.
Members
of the winning Ames team were Devin Lu, Miles Greenwald, Wyatt Miller, Michael
Masteller and Martin Gallegher. Those on the runner-up Stilwell team were Nick
Manna, Courtney Guntly, Kate Vukovich and Alex Anderson. Members of
Gilbert’s third-place team were Holland Dougherty, Mitchell Olson, Devin
Stowell, Laura Reger and Cole Simmons.
The
24 teams that competed came from 17 schools. On Feb. 18, 124 teams from 47 Iowa
junior high and middle schools began the Knowledge Bowl in a preliminary
computer round.
