AMES HIGH TAKES TOP PLACE—AGAIN—AT AEA KNOWLEDGE BOWL

DES MOINES, Iowa – For the fifth straight year, Ames High School captured the the Heartland Area Education Agency Knowledge Bowl, Nov. 18. The Ames A team defeated the runner-up West Des Moines Valley A team and the third-place Valley B team in the championship round.

The victory marked the fifth year in a row that an Ames team has won the Knowledge Bowl. Last year Ames swept the top three places. Students in the annual event are asked questions from a number of academic subjects including history, English, mathematics, science and geography.

Members of the winning Ames A team were Neal Marasinghe, Chuck Cleary, Josh Moloney, Cris Matibag and Evan Hudson. Ames is coached by Kirk Daddow.

The second-place Valley A team included Yuly Suvorov, Mike McIntosh, Vanessa Brown, Sam Palakurthy and Tara Tannenbaum. The third-place Valley B squad team included Emily Terndrup, Eric Mov, Mike Drob, Chase Nordengren and Robert Adams.

Johnston High School finished in fourth place overall and Boone High and Ames’ C team tied for fifth.

Twenty-four teams from 14 central Iowa high schools competed in the finals Nov. 18. In October, 107 teams from 40 high schools competed in the Knowledge Bowl's preliminary round.

Heartland AEA is one of Iowa's 12 area education agencies. Heartland provides services and programs to 55 school districts, 32 approved private schools and preschool youth with special needs in 11 central Iowa counties.
