Kurzweil Services
Heartland provides a service for scanning books and educational materials and converting them to digital files for use with Kurzweil 3000 software. Kurzweil 3000 is the premiere writing, learning and reading software solution for struggling students. The software uses a multisensory approach, presenting printed or electronic text on the computer screen with added audible and visual accessibility. The Kurzweil software incorporates an extensive list of dynamic features including powerful decoding, study skills, writing and test taking tools designed to adapt to each individual student╒s learning style.
The school district must own the copyrighted books and must assign a book to each student who is using an alternate format. The scanned files must be used exclusively for students who have an identified disability, documented on an IEP or 504 accommodation plan. The alternative format files must not be reproduced or distributed.
Bindings will be removed for scanning and will be replaced with a spiral binding. Files will be saved in .kes file format for use with Kurzweil software. The school must own Kurzweil 3000 software to use these files.
