Introduction to Ning & Social Networking

Social networking has become extremely popular in recent years, as the social tools of web 2.0 allow users to have discussions and collaboration online instead of solely face-to-face. Most social networking sites are free for users to join, and allow them the chance to meet new people, participate in discussion boards, find out about or post events, and share files like photos and videos.

The largest social network presently is Facebook, which has become a popular site for people of all ages (in fact, the fastest growing demographic on Facebook are people over 65).

Many people like Facebook because it is very easy to use and learn, and it has become a forum to not only meet new people, but also become reconnected with former friends and colleagues. The charts below show the increase in Facebook traffic compared to the increase in the internet as a whole.

The problem with Facebook for many users is that it is used on a personal level, and may not be appropriate for professional collaboration. Plus, because Facebook is an open community that anyone can join, it doesn't always fit the purposes of a select group.

Ning is a free alternative that users can create on their own and customize to fit their group's needs. Ning comes with a bevy of options to use, and can be set up to allow open membership, moderated membership, or strictly closed membership.
