Nings allow email messages to be sent for any of several actions. It will send it to the email address listed in your profile.
1 - Uncheck any boxes for categories you don't want to receive emails for. Depending on the number of people and the amount of use in your Ning, you might want to uncheck all except for the most critical ones, because email will be flooding your inbox, especially with several Ning members.
2 - In a Ning, you have the ability to "follow" certain discussions, blogs, and groups you choose. This means every time there is an update, you would receive an email. At some point, you may wish to stop following those items. An easy way to stop following all of them is to click the red "Clear My Follow List" button
3 - To receive no emails, check the box at the bottom.
4 - Again, be sure to save.
