Registration and Procedures
Registration:
Enrollment is limited, and classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Early registration is important to insure your place in the class.
Online registration is available for most Heartland AEA courses and workshops. You may access the online catalog at www.aea11.k12.ia.us or click here: Course Schedule. Our web site provides the most current course and enrollment information. If there is a registration fee, you must pay by credit card (Visa or MasterCard only) to register online. Please note: credit card authorization requires Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher or Netscape Navigator 4.0 or higher. A printable registration form is also available on our web site (click on Classes, Workshops & Trainings and then Registration Print Form). Payment must accompany your registration form. Payment options include check (payable to Heartland AEA), credit card (fill in your credit card number and expiration date on the registration form), purchase order or cash. Return your completed registration form and payment to: Professional Development, Heartland AEA 11, 6500 Corporate Drive, Johnston, IA 50131. If you are paying by credit card or purchase order, you may fax your registration to 515-270-5383. Please be sure to fill out all registration forms completely. Incomplete forms may be returned. We are unable to take registrations over the phone. For further registration information, call Professional Development at 515-270-0405 or 1-800-255-0405 Ext. 14701.
Confirmation Letters:
You will receive confirmation of your registration either by mail or e-mail (if you supply your e-mail address on your registration form). If you register online and provide an e-mail address, you will receive your confirmation by e-mail. The confirmation will include course information (building, address, room number, dates and times). If you do not receive a confirmation, please contact Heartland AEA to see if you are registered or view "My Course History."
If a course is full, we will automatically place your name on a waiting list and send you a notice. Our waiting list is also on a first-come, first-served basis. If cancellations occur, we will notify the next person in line that they are confirmed in the course. If you are on the waiting list and do not hear from us, you will not be able to attend the class. If you choose not to be on the waiting list and would instead like to enroll in another course or receive a refund, please contact us. We will try to accommodate you.
Class Cancellations:
Heartland reserves the right to cancel any class that does not have sufficient enrollment. Course cancellations will be made approximately 1-2 weeks prior to the start date of each class.
Cancellations due to emergency situations such as inclement weather will be broadcast on TV stations KCCI (8) and WOI (5) as well as on radio stations 1040 WHO, 95 KGGO, 97.3 Hawk and 92.5 KJJY.
Credit Options:
LR = License Renewal Credit
GRAD = Drake University Graduate Credit
CEU-NU = Continuing Education Units for Nurses
Nurses:
Heartland Area Education Agency 11 is an approved provider (#147) and thus can offer professional growth programs for school nurses (CEUs). The approved programs listed in this catalog address 5.3(2) a #1,3,4 & 5 in the Administrative Code. Program Evaluation: We encourage school nurses to evaluate each program in which they participate. School nurses have the option of 1) returning the evaluations at the end of the course to the instructor, 2) sending the evaluations directly to Curt Jeffryes, Professional Development Coordinator, at Heartland AEA 11, or 3) sending the evaluations directly to the Iowa Board of Nursing, RiverPoint Business Park, 400 SW 8th Street, Suite B, Des Moines, Iowa 50309-4685.
Expectations for Licensure Renewal:
Educators who plan to use classes for license renewal must complete courses that apply to their endorsement/teaching area. Each one-credit-hour course must be at least 15 contact hours in length. Licensure renewal credits operate on a pass-fail basis. A passing grade for relicensure credit is equivalent to an & or "B" letter grade for graduate credit. Full-time participant attendance is required.
Drake University Graduate Credit:
An option for Drake University graduate credit is available for most of our relicensure classes. See the credit options listed for each class. Graduate credit from Drake University will be available at class. The cost is $100 per credit hour, registration and payment for Drake graduate credit is due at the time of registration for the class.
Emergency Notifications:
In the event of an emergency, phone calls should be directed to the Professional Development office at Heartland AEA (515-270-0405 or 1-800-255-0405 Ext. 14701). Heartland staff will attempt to notify the person immediately. Please do not direct phone calls to other buildings or class locations.
Facilities:
Classes will be held in various locations. The site is listed below the description for each class.
Many of the classes are held in local school district facilities. Please honor their policies concerning smoke-free environments as well as not allowing food and beverages in the classrooms.
Transcripts:
Heartland Area Education Agency will send transcripts to each participant who successfully completes a course after the course is over and the attendance report has been submitted to our office and verified. The transcript will indicate the course title and the number of credits earned. The transcript will also contain a receipt of payment of the registration fee. Each participant will receive three copies of the transcript. One copy is for the participant's personal records, one is for relicensure and one for the participant's employer (as needed). Heartland's transcript will not indicate the graduate credit earned. Heartland will provide you with an official transcript showing your complete Professional Development history. To receive your transcript, a fee of $10 is required. Payment online requires a credit card (Visa or Mastercard only). If you prefer to pay by check or money order, you must submit your request by mail or in person. Click here for a Printable Transcript Request Form.
Drake University will issue an official transcript approximately two weeks after grades are received. To better serve students, the Office of Student Records has replaced the grade report with an official transcript at no cost. A transcript will be automatically sent to the student's home address. Additional transcripts may be requested at the cost of $5.00 per transcript by visiting the Student Records and Academic Information page on the Drake University website http://www.drake.edu/studentrecords/transrequest.html. Students may also view their grades by visiting Drake's website at www.drake.edu/students and linking to MYDUSIS and enter a secure area. To view your information, enter your social security number (also known as you DUSIS ID) and your default PIN (the month, day, and year you were born). If you have any questions regarding transcripts, call 515-271-3091 or 1-800-44-DRAKE, extension 3091.

Requests to Drop An Activity:
If, after attending the first class, a participant decides to drop the activity, he or she must contact Heartland Professional Development Services. If Heartland AEA is notified of the drop prior to the end of the activity, two options are available: (1) the registration fee will be refunded to you less a $10.00 service charge or (2) the registration fee may be transferred to another activity. Additional fees due for a new activity must be received before the registration will be transferred. Fee differences owed by Heartland AEA will be refunded to the payer. Non-Attendance of an Activity:
If, prior to the end of the activity, Heartland Professional Development Services is not notified of the intent to drop the activity, the registration fee will be forfeited. It is not the policy of Professional Development Services to issue refunds to non-attending students since other potential students on the class waiting list have been denied the opportunity to enroll.
Waiting List:
If you are on the waiting list for an activity and are not notified that a space is available, a full refund will automatically be issued after the activity is completed. Prior to the end of the activity, two options are available: (1) a full refund of any fees paid may be requested or (2) the registration fee may be transferred to another activity. Additional fees due for a new activity must be received before the registration will be transferred. Fee differences owed by Heartland AEA will be refunded to the payer.
