The C ontent A rea capacity B uilding (CAB) Project is a multiyear professional development opportunity focused on capacity building at the building or district level to support teachers and administrators in accelerating student achievement. Leadership teams meet regularly to study student performance; to study implementation of instructional strategies; and to deepen their understanding in the content areas of reading, math, or science. Each session provides opportunities to learn about content, instructional strategies, and how the team would bring the information back to the district to share with other staff.
Overall Goal: 
To accelerate student achievement in the content areas of reading, mathematics, and science.
Project Goal:
To build internal/external capacity in the content area(s) of reading, mathematics, and science to:
- provide professional development
- support professional development
- sustain professional development to increase student achievement to all students.
Overall Outcomes: Participants will
· Support district professional development efforts using the Iowa Professional Development Model
· Establish the necessary support components for designing an initiative to accelerate student achievement in reading, mathematics, or science
· Study student and staff performance within and across classrooms and schools
· Model, support, and study the implementation of scientifically based strategies, programs, and materials
Project Assumptions
- All participants will attend every session, will learn, and practice new strategies.
- The principal (administrator) is a critical participant in the professional development efforts.
- The instructional leader and the leadership team will provide ongoing professional development and support in the building
- The strength of the leadership team will determine success in the building.
- External technical assistance will be provided to support district efforts.
- Efforts will be aimed directly at instruction.
- Data is used to identify a focus so efforts are not fragmented.
- Data is collected, organized, and analyzed on a regular basis to guide instructional decision-making.
- Collaborative work efforts are critical.
- All staff involved in content areas studies are engaged in the building efforts.
District policies and structures will support building efforts (e.g., time for staff and leadership teams to met regularly, resources,
focus, district developed standards and benchmarks)
