Building Assistance Team (BAT) Data
Getting Started
Procedures for Collecting Data On Your
Building Assistance Team
For the past three years, the Special Education Research Group at
Heartland AEA 11 has collected information on the activities of a
small number of building assistance teams in the Heartland area.
Each year, data for each participating school has been analyzed and
results have been provided to school personnel. The same data was
also analyzed as a composite group for examination by Heartland
staff and has provided a glimpse into the presence of the
problem-solving model in Heartland schools. Overall, for the past
three years, data suggest that problems in the Heartland area are
being solved using general education interventions about 75% of the
time when students are referred to the BAT, with 25% of students
seen by BATs eventually being evaluated for special education
entitlement. Also, most problems referred to BATs are in the areas
of reading (36%), behavior (22%), and math (20%).
Currently, Heartland AEA 11 is not systematically collecting
information on the activities of building assistance teams in the
Heartland area. However, the Special Education Research Group would
like to give you the opportunity to use the data collection form
used in the study to collect your own BAT data. Also, if you are a
school within Heartland AEA 11, we can provide assistance with the
analysis of data at the end of the school year.
If you decide to collect information on the
activities of your building assistance team, here's how to get
started:
Heartland AEA 11 schools:
1. Print copies of the "
BAT Data Collection Sheet" and the "
BAT Data Collection Guidelines" from this web page. The data
collection sheet is a legal sized document and will need to be
printed on legal sized paper. To request paper copies, contact Jeri
Gustafson in the Johnston office (1-800-362-2720 ext. 4530 or jgustafson@aea11.k12.ia.us.)
2. After each BAT meeting, fill in the
information for each student discussed during the meeting. If you
have conducted BAT meetings in your building prior to obtaining the
data collection sheet, update the sheet with information on the
students previously brought to your BAT and then continue adding to
the sheet after each future meeting.
3. After the last BAT meeting of the year,
if you would like assistance in analyzing your data, contact Jeri
Gustafson in the Johnston office (1-800-362-2720 ext. 4530 or jgustafson@aea11.k12.ia.us).

data, click on "

Gustafson in the Johnston office (1-800-362-2720 ext. 4530 or jgustafson@aea11.k12.ia.us.)
2. After each BAT meeting, fill in the
information for each student discussed during the meeting. If you
have conducted BAT meetings in your building prior to obtaining the
data collection sheet, update the sheet with information on the
students previously brought to your BAT and then continue adding to
the sheet after each future meeting.
3. After the last BAT meeting of the year, enter
and analyze your data. To review an example of how you might look
at your data, click on "
